Avery W. Hall papers document Hall’s participation as a civic leader in Salisbury Maryland and surrounding regions from 1853-1889, 1932-1982 with the bulk of the material dating from 1945-1970. Hall’s leadership is identified through a series of political memorabilia including correspondence from Governor Millard Tawes and Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Also included in the collection are booklets from Avery W. Hall Insurance Agency relating to Peninsula Regional Hospital and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Project.

Edward Hammond collection

The Edward Hammond collection contains a photograph copy of Dr. John Taylor Hammond (1831-1902), two Agricultural Mutual Aid Society of Caroline County, MD certificates for John Hammond and his wife, Esther P. dated December 1, 1887, a narrative by J. Millard Tawes at the First Annual Verrazzano Festival in 1972, and a dance card with pencil attached from 1888. The holiday dance was held by the Thursday Club at Victor Hall in Snow Hill.

Mary L. Nock papers

Mary L. Nock papers document the professional and personal life of Mary Nock, who lived from 1903 to 1987. The papers range 1669 to 1992, as she included in her possession colonial land grants as well as a copy of the Laws of Maryland which established Salisbury in 1735. Her personal papers document her life as a wife and family member of the Layfield-Nock families through photographs, greeting cards, and genealogical research. Mary Nock’s professional papers include materials such as professional correspondence, speeches, drafts of her book It Was a Joy and a Pleasure, awards, as well as ephemera from her time as a politician. Also included in the Nock papers are written works on Mary Nock by Ginger McClain Beningo, as well as Beningo’s notes and correspondence regarding the biographical works from 1990-1992, which make up the bulk of the material.

Michael Lewis papers

The papers of Michael Lewis reflect research he and several students collected regarding Maryland environmental history after his arrival at Salisbury University in 2000. A significant portion of the papers pertain to the Delmarva Peninsula including the health of the Chesapeake Bay, Ocean City, and Maryland ecology. There is also research conducted on the transition of 20th century Delmarva agriculture and the poultry industry. The papers include several oral histories from Dr. Lewis’ colleagues, ornithologists from the Ward Museum, and Delmarva environmentalists. Many of the documents are facsimiles of their original whose origin dates from 1887-2009.

The Papers of J. Millard Tawes consist of the political and personal papers of J. Millard Tawes and of historic Maryland records. The collection documents Tawes’ career as a politician from 1930-1979, including his service as the 54th Governor of Maryland from 1959-1967. It contains speeches, correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera offering insight into fifty years of state and national politics. The collection includes Tawes’ speeches on the Freedom Riders and on the Cambridge Riots of 1963. It also includes correspondence between Tawes and Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.
